Brad Lincoln - Co-founder

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
I think there are two things: Craft felt like a revolution of taste and values. I wanted to be part of that! People who work in the craft beer industry look at the world differently. It feels less about consumerism and more about community.
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
Since I was a child I have dreamed of starting a company I was proud of. Funkwerks has basically been living my childhood dream for the past ten year.
What’s the best part of your job?
Waking up and knowing that I am working with a team I want to work with and on a project I want to work on!
What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
Small purposeful, community oriented manufacturing in the United States is something that I wish more industries would embrace.
What has craft beer taught you?
So much of what I know today is from being in this industry for eleven years. I think the greatest thing I have learned is that small companies can make a big difference. I look around at the breweries that came before and see not only the industry they created but the change they have had on the world.
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Solenna but it doesn’t sell well and it is a complex and difficult beer to brew, so I was told by sales that we were never allowed to brew it again… otherwise there would be mutiny.

Gordon Schuck - Co-founder & Head Brewer 

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
The first time I had a Celis White in the early ‘90s got me into craft beer and when I started home-brewing that was the first style of beer I tried to make.
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
I love creating something that brings joy to people.
What’s the best part of your job?
Well it used to be traveling to festivals to pour beer and meet our fans.
What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
How fast things change and the incredible creativity of craft brewers.
What has craft beer taught you?
How to be a rigger.
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Saison of course! That was our first beer and most award winning.


OPERATIONS AND ADMINISTRATION


Natosha -  Accounting
Been a member of the funky family since April 12th, 2012. 

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
9 years ago when I was hired at Funkwerks, I didn’t know much about craft beer at all. Lucky for me it was not a requirement for a bookkeeper. ☺ I feel truly blessed to have fallen into such a wonderful industry, full of friendly, fun people and an exciting environment.

What’s the best part of your job?
I love our team! I love that we are always growing in different ways, moving forward and we have each other to count on for assistance and encouragement. I love that I am always learning new things and I also love having Brad as the leader of the company who encourages us to express our ideas and lends his support for our success.

What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
Seeing the creativity that goes into making a product that people are drawn to. From the beer recipes and experiments, to the name, to the labels, to the social media, it’s an art! It’s also pretty cool to see how excited people are to talk about beer and how much they love Funkwerks.
What has craft beer taught you?
I have learned what I think is the best or worst beer ever is not always how other people feel about it. It’s sometimes a mystery to me. 
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Saison any day of the week and we did a one-time beer called Ron Burgundy…soooo good!
 

Michelle -  Graphic Design
Been a member of the funky family since August 24th, 2016.
 
What drew you into the world of craft beer?
I love the camaraderie that exists in the craft beer community. Everyone in craft beer can relate to each other because we're all here for the same reason – we love craft beer – whether it's making it, sharing it with others, talking about it or just drinking it! Unlike other fields I've worked in, it really is community over competition. We all want to succeed and we want everyone else to, too. 
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
I love sharing a brand's story through visual solutions, I'll tell you what. Could I do that in other industries? Yes. Would it be as fun? No! It's awesome to work with a small team, get to know the true ins and outs of a brand and really stand behind the story and the product. It makes marketing a product very enjoyable when you love it. 
What’s the best part of your job?
Sampling the product. ;) But really, my favorite part is packaging design! Making an idea come to life from a concept, to computer, to beautiful-shiny-printed-tangible object is pretty rewarding. 
What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
The creativity behind the drinkable end result. It's really fun to be a part of brainstorming and trial and error of certain beers. 
What has craft beer taught you?
Always be on your toes, ready to pivot. 
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
UGH, Deux Funk! A sour, fruity, brett beer that was brewed in collaboration with Wicked Weed circa 2016.

Lauren - Marketing & Beertender
Been a member of the funky family since June 23, 2017. 

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
The sense of community. In a world full of relentless competition and lessons in hard-knocks, the Fort Collins beer scene somehow manages to put all that in the corner. Yes, we are all working towards the same goal but this group of like-minded individuals always seem to be the first to extend a hand to help out those in need.

Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
I genuinely enjoy what I do because it brings such a delight to people's lives. I am always so amazed to see the genuine amount of positive feedback that Funkwerks receives from our social channels. Same goes for the taproom, people are excited about what we do here.

What’s the best part of your job?
The people. We are an incredibly small team and I know that can count on each and every one of my colleagues… and I wouldn’t want it any other way! We also have the most amazing regulars, hands down.

What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
The ingenuity. You never know what the next day will bring in the beer world.

What has craft beer taught you?
This might come off as cliche… but I mean it. Craft beer has sincerely taught me that everyone is different. The same thing is definitely not for everyone. Everyone has their own unique interpretation of things.

What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Oof. That’s a toughy. And I don’t know how I’m supposed to pick just one. So, I’m going to pick three. Dark Prophet, Deceit and Lima Pepina!... I’m a versatile beer drinker. ;)

Hadley - Taproom Manager
Been a member of the funky family since May 23rd, 2018.

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
Craft beer is what Fort Collins is known for! When I moved here years ago, the industry was smaller and growing at an exciting rate, and I wanted to be a part of it. I’m so glad I was able to become a part of this community.

Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
The craft beer scene attracts all kinds of people from all over the world. I’m constantly learning new things and sharing other things that I’ve learned, which makes for a fun and exciting work environment.

What’s the best part of your job?
We have an amazing team at Funkwerks, and some of the best customers around! I feel lucky to spend so much time with such lovely people.

What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
There is a sense of artisanship in craft beer. It’s not necessarily about what’s trendy or seasonal. People always remember an incredible beer they’ve had, even if it was just once.

What has craft beer taught you?
To keep trying new things! I’m often surprised when I try a beer that I think I won’t like. Tastes change, and it’s important to expand your horizons.

What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Bramble has a special place in my heart, although a classic Saison always sounds good too.


Terra - Beertender and Shipping
Been a member of the funky family since November 10th, 2018.

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
I always loved beer, from the very first sip. Some people say it is an acquired taste, but not for me. I decided I wanted to work in the industry after seeing how happy my friend who was beertending was. He was all smiles while he was slinging beers all day! He inspired me to take a chance in this industry.

Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
So much of life is about achieving and striving towards goals, which is important! But it’s also important to enjoy the time we have now. To take an hour or two to sit back and unwind with a delicious beer and let the world's problems melt away. I love being able to provide that for our customers.

What’s the best part of your job?
The regulars here are amazing people. Being able to serve them has been a pleasure! The craft beer industry has been good to me, but Funkwerks in particular makes me feel very valued. I know they have respect for me and my ideas which makes work so much better!

What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
I think the best part is how it is always evolving. There are always new trends and new ideas in craft beer. It just keeps improving. 
What has craft beer taught you?
Craft beer has taught me not to take life too seriously. Some things in life, like beer, are just meant to be enjoyed! Sometimes it’s best to not overthink it and just go for it!

What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Deceit! It has been at least a year since I was lucky enough to have one, but my mouth still waters when I think about it. A Belgian-Style Pale Strong that was perfectly balanced, refreshing, and a little deceitful with how palatable it is with its 8.5% ABV.
 

Shawna - Beertender
Been a member of the funky family since October 15th, 2020.

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
The community mostly. I came from an an incredibly formal job where I almost felt robotic. Now I am at a place where I genuinely have fun at work.
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
To me serving craft beer is about two key things; helping people try new things they will love and creating an experience. Both things I really enjoy being able to do for people.
What’s the best part of your job?
Meeting all the wonderful people that come here. I've never had such a great group of regulars. Also, getting a chance to try all our new beers!
What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
The millions of flavors and combinations that are possible. I love always getting to try new things.
What has craft beer taught you?
That almost any beer tastes better aged in a barrel.
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Barrel-Aged Tropic King.

Cleo - Beertender
Been a member of the funky family since January 18th, 2021.

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
I love storytelling, and craft beers always come with a good backstory; happy accidents, crazy experiments, drunk monks and dirty old barns just to name a few.
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
Because craft beer brings people together, and after this crazy year I can’t think of anything we need more.
What’s the best part of your job?
The people of course! (But also the dogs. Seriously, bring your dogs in, it makes my day.)
What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
I find it really exciting that people are so into it. Think about how many small craft breweries have been able to open in the last decade! That’s all thanks to the people who love to drink it.
What has craft beer taught you?
To slow down and be in the moment. Craft beer makes you want to take a minute and really think about the smell, taste, and feeling you get when you drink it. It’s like a little beer-meditation!
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Well they say you never forget your first love right? The Saison is one of the first craft beers I ever tried, it’s what got me hooked on Funkwerks years and years ago. For that it will always hold a special place in my, er, stomach.


PRODUCTION


 

Scott - Brewing & Cellar Supervisor
Been a member of the funky family since December 5th, 2016. 

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
I love problem solving and tinkering with things, and brewing allows you to do that and so much more! The experimentation and opportunity for continued learning has always been a wonderfully appealing part of the industry.
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
It is really our patrons and customers that make me passionate about my job: I am humbled to be part of such a well-respected brewery and organization where people trust us to deliver quality products. I definitely feel the weight of expectation, but it is so rewarding to be able to have that trust from so many people - it is definitely inspiring!
What’s the best part of your job?
Listening to Rebecca Black on Fridays...duh! =)

What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?The constant change - it can be exhausting at times, but it's amazing how creative people can be! Five years ago I would have never thought that hazy IPAs would be a thing, but now they are ubiquitous and you would be hard pressed going somewhere and not finding one! I'm excited to see what other new things pop up from things I would never think of myself!
What has craft beer taught you?
Relationships are important - be it with the customer just trying your beer for the first time, or within the team itself, or with the local maltster down the street. This is a community and it's amazing what we can all do together when we put our minds to it!
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
I have to say Nelson Sauvin - it was the first beer I brought home after starting at Funkwerks; we had just moved into our new apartment and my wife and I just sat on the floor in the empty living room and drank the beer. It was a special moment so that beer will forever have a place in my heart.

Parker - Brewing
Been a member of the funky family since June 22nd, 2020. 

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
I used to work in a liquor store and that led to me trying a lot of different beers. After a couple years I decided that I wanted to try out the industry because the work culture and community looked like a good fit for me. 
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
Brewing is hard work, but it is also rewarding. I enjoy being able to craft a tangible product that I can share with friends and strangers alike. I get to use both my mind and my body to create a unique product.
What’s the best part of your job?
Definitely the part where I enjoy the fruits of my labor. I like to have a beer with the regulars and coworkers after a shift and unwind. On the clock, I enjoy barrel blending to try and find the best balance of aged beers at our disposal.
What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
I think craft beer is generally exciting. There's constantly new styles and techniques being developed. New breweries are still popping up everywhere, so there is always something to try that I have not before.
What has craft beer taught you?
The importance of people. Previously, I had a different perception of the consumer-business relationship. In this industry I feel like there is a genuine care for each other. Today I see these drinkers as a community more than just a customer.
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Bourbon Barrel Quad.

Zach - Packaging
Been a member of the funky family since March 1st, 2021. 

What drew you into the world of craft beer?
Moving to Fort Collins 3 years ago opened my eyes to the world of craft beer. My love for tasty brews coupled with my arrival to the Mecca of craft beer propelled me to seek a career opportunity in the Industry.
Why are you passionate about your role in craft beer?
I enjoy knowing I play a vital role in getting our terrific beer into the hands of customers throughout Colorado and parts of the Midwest. I'm very passionate about the quality product we provide, it puts a smile on my face knowing I help get our beer into the hands of fellow craft beer lovers.
What’s the best part of your job?
The team here at Funkwerks is filled with kind, passionate, like mind individuals who all share the common goal of wanting sustained success for the Funkwerks Brand. Waking up in the morning is easy when you know you're going to a job where everyone enjoys being there!
What do you think the most exciting thing about craft beer is?
The constant evolution of the industry is something that really intrigues me. As the industry continues to grow, so does the wide range of flavors and styles of beer that are produced. Can't wait to see where craft beer is in the next 10 years!
What has craft beer taught you?
To keep an open mind and embrace change with open arms. Everything in this life is finite and ever-evolving. Enjoy what you can, while you can!
What is your favorite Funkwerks beer of all time?
Oud Bruin by a mile.. I love all of our beer, but Oud Bruin will always hold a special place in my heart.
